Would you like to be enveloped in your favorite niche perfume all day long, but do you think it's not persistent enough and after a couple of hours you can't smell it anymore? We have good news for you: The durability of a perfume depends not only on the perfume itself, but also on other factors, such as the way it is sprayed.

If you're looking for a way to make perfume last longer, we suggest you follow these ten simple tricks!

1. Choose the right perfume

The first trick to make sure your perfume lasts a long time is really simple and banal: buy a perfume that lasts a long time! Since perfumes are composed partly of the perfume itself (essential oils and/or synthetic molecules) and partly of alcohol, a good way to estimate the persistence of a perfume is to know its concentration.

  • Eau de Cologne: low concentration of perfume (less than 5%)
  • Eau de Toilette: medium concentration of perfume (5-10%)
  • Eau de Parfum: high concentration of perfume (10-20%)
  • Extrait de Parfum: very high concentration of perfume (above 20%)

Colognes (which, by the way, aren't just for men as many believe!) are fresh and light and great for summer, but they aren't very persistent. If you are looking for a perfume that lasts a long time, therefore, we recommend a Eau de Parfum or, even better, a Extrait de Parfum, possibly with an amber, woody, musky or spicy base (citrus and flowery scents are generally less persistent). Some of the artistic perfume brands known for their high persistence are Mancera, Montale, Nasomatto, Orto Parisi e Perris Monte Carlo.

2. Do not store perfume in the bathroom

If you've ever read the label of a drink or food, you've probably noticed the indication "keep in a cool, dry place away from sources of light". The same thing goes for perfumes: to keep them in the best possible way, it is important to store them in the right place. Many people keep them in the bathroom, which however is the area of the house most prone to humidity and sudden changes in temperature. We advise you to keep them in another room, possibly inside their box to protect them from light.

3. Moisturize your skin before spraying perfume

Perfume molecules bind better to hydrated skin than dry skin, so the best time to spray perfume is right after applying your moisturizing cream or lotion after a shower.

4. Use creams and lotions with the same fragrance

Some perfumes, especially niche ones, are also available in cream or lotion format. Using these products in addition to the perfume itself is a great way to wrap yourself in your favorite fragrance and stay perfumed throughout the day.

5. Spray the perfume in the right places

In order for the perfume to be properly dispersed into the surrounding air, it is important to spray it on the warmest and most vascularized parts of the body. The best points are the neck (particularly on the sides) and the insides of the wrists, but in the case of short dresses the insides of the elbows and popliteal cavities (the back of the knees) are also perfectly fine.

6. Do not rub your skin after spraying the perfume

Once you've sprayed the perfume, don't rub your skin or touch your wrists together. Doing so will break up the top note molecules, dissolving them faster than normal.

7. Spray perfume on the comb

Some people spray perfume on their hair as well as on their bodies, however we recommend that you avoid it, as the alcohol in perfumes can dry out your hair. However, if you still want to have perfumed hair, you can always spray a little perfume on the comb and then do your hair as normal. Your hair will be perfumed and you won't run the risk of drying it out.

8. Try spraying it on clothes too

If you want to wrap yourself in a perfumed cloud, you can also spray the perfume on your clothes or, in winter, on your scarf. But be careful to avoid colored and/or oily perfumes, otherwise you risk staining the fabrics. Also remember that a perfume sprayed on a fabric may smell different from the same perfume sprayed on the skin (see point 5 of this article).

9. Combine the perfume with a fixing perfume

Did you know that there are fixative perfumes, that is able to enhance other perfumes? For example, Eau de Moi by Serra&Fonseca (which, by the way, is one of the few allergen-free perfumes) is very good even alone but, if combined with other perfumes, it makes them more intense and persistent. Seeing is believing!

10. Combine the perfume with a cream or lotion

If you want your body to stay perfumed for a long time, you can even add perfume to a neutral-scented moisturizer or lotion. Apply it generously all over the body after the morning shower and your favorite fragrance will envelop you until the evening.
