The origins of the Advent Calendar

In German-speaking countries, where Protestantism originated centuries ago and has spread enormously house after house, the importance of living in the family while waiting for Christmas (the holiday dedicated to the birth of Jesus) has always been very high. L'Advent it is the liturgical season including the four Sundays preceding Christmas, during which Christians prepare themselves spiritually for the celebration of Christ's coming into the world.

To involve children more and give them a more concrete idea of the passing of time and of the days that anticipate one of the most important events of the year, starting from second half of the 800th century in many homes drawings depicting saints or Christmas images were used to be hung daily on the walls or on the windows, forming a sort of "thematic calendar" perfect for creating an atmosphere of celebration, discovery and watchful expectation. Another very common practice was to mark the passage of days from the beginning of Advent to Christmas day with chalk lines on a wall.

Il Advent Calendar as we know and understand it today was born in Germany in the early twentieth century, thanks to the growing commercial success of special printed sheets with religious images or short poems to be cut out and pasted daily on a page with blank boxes from the first day of December until the 24th, Christmas Eve. Year after year, these celebratory calendars have become richer and more elaborate, coming to have special three-dimensional boxes containing chocolates, biscuits or other types of sweets to feed the little ones (but not only!) the daily desire to mark the days with surprise after surprise.
