Sandalwood, used in religious and funeral rites, burned as incense in Buddhism and Hinduism soon became a precious raw material for perfumery.
Intense base note has the ability to harmonize compositions.
Its great success will become its small condemnation, now counted among the endangered species it is protected in India, and the best natural quality is practically unobtainable for perfumery (mainly minor essential oils such as Amyris are found).
The plant takes from 20 to 30 years to mature and be rich in the precious oil, furthermore the highest concentrations are not found in green or recently cut plants, but in dead plants, both fallen and still erect.
Santal du Pacifique is a hypnotic and mysterious perfume in which warm woody, creamy and velvety notes develop an enveloping warmth.
Floral notes accentuate the mysterious, intoxicating and sweet side.
The islands of the Pacific are pristine paradises and for the most part uninhabited by man.
Nature is alive and wild.
Inhabited by millions of different species of flora and fauna, there are several endemic species including sandalwood.
It is precisely in one of these distant lands, located south of the Tropic of Cancer, that Sandalwood lives. In that part of the world that borders between Asia and Oceania, the area of origin of the sandal is to be placed; from there it was also exported and cultivated in China and South America; it still lives spontaneously in the equatorial forests with a permanently hot and humid climate.
Sandalwood is an evergreen tree up to ten meters tall, capable of parasitizing the roots of other trees with its roots; it has a pale yellow wood, with a characteristic musky smell.
It has opposite and petiolate leaves, lanceolate in shape and acute apex.
The flowers, white or yellowish, are gathered in clusters in the axils of the leaves or at the top of the twigs. The fruits are medium sized drupes.
The precious and aromatic sandalwood oil is obtained from the distillation of the central part of the trunk and the roots.
The use of sandalwood originated in India, where the trees arrived in ancient times and grow wild today.
Its success is linked to the belief that it can appease the rational part of the mind, allowing one to enter into relationship with the deepest stages of one's being.
The incense produced from sandalwood is used precisely as an aid for meditation.
These mystical peculiarities of sandalwood also refer to its use, since ancient times, in the creation of musical instruments and perfumed sacred and profane furnishings.
Our recommendations: a perfume that leaves no doubt about the theme on which it is based. Almost a monochord in which the sandalwood lover can find all the pleasantness of this fantastic essence.
Occasion: a dinner in a luxurious Indian restaurant in Mumbai.
